INMATE DEATH AT CALIFORNIA CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION UNDER INVESTIGATION

Tehachapi – The Investigative Services Unit at California Correctional Institution (CCI) and investigators from the Kern County District Attorney’s Office are investigating an inmate homicide that occurred on Facility A within the Security Housing Unit at CCI.

On June 4, 2014, at about 11:30 a.m. inmate Oscar Rendon was discovered by staff in his assigned cell unresponsive.  He was pronounced deceased at 12:05 p.m.

Rendon, 41 was received by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) on November 5, 1999, from Los Angeles County with a 61-year sentence for kidnapping and robbery.

The alleged suspect in the case is identified as inmate Billy Guzman, 53, who is serving a 94-years-to-life sentence from Santa Clara County for assault with a deadly weapon. Guzman was received into CDCR on September 6, 1986.

California Correctional Institution, a minimum- to maximum-security prison, is located 52 miles east of Bakersfield.  The prison opened in 1933, houses more than 4,600 minimum- to maximum-security inmates and employs more than 2,000 people.
