North Kern State Prison Inmate Death Being Investigated as a Homicide

Delano—Investigators at North Kern State Prison (NKSP) and the Kern County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the death of an inmate as a homicide, after he was discovered unresponsive in his cell with visible injuries on Sunday, June 29, 2014.

Inmate Donald W. Cook, 63, was pronounced dead on June 29, 2014, at a local outside area hospital.

Prison officials have named inmate Rory C. Moser, 34, as a suspect in the case.

The victim, inmate Cook, was received by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) on April 4, 2014 from Los Angeles County to serve a two-year, eight-month sentence for petty theft with priors.

The suspect, inmate Moser, was received by CDCR on June 18, 2014 from Sacramento County to serve a two-year eight-month sentence for driving under the influence resulting in serious bodily injury.

The Office of the Inspector General has been notified.
North Kern State Prison, which opened in 1993, houses approximately 4,890    minimum to medium and maximum custody inmates.  The prison, located in Kern County, provides educational, medical and mental health services and employs more than 1,300 people.
